Scottish Parliament Commends Ayrshire Cancer Support for its Dedication to Supporting People Across Ayrshire Affected by Cancer.

In a recent series of motions filed in the Scottish Parliament, Ayrshire Cancer Support (ACS) has once again been acknowledged for its dedication to supporting individuals and families affected by cancer throughout Ayrshire.

The latest motion, lodged on January 19th, 2024, is just one of many instances where ACS has received praise from MSPs for its invaluable contributions to the community.

What is a motion in Scottish Parliament?

Motions in the Scottish Parliament serve various purposes, including to raise awareness of critical issues, suggesting topics for debate, recognising the efforts of groups, businesses, or individuals, and facilitating parliamentary business. ACS has been honoured by the Scottish Parliament on multiple occasions, highlighting its exceptional commitment to providing support for people in Ayrshire affected by cancer.

Motion 1: “Big Dip” Fundraiser for ACS

Sharon Dowey, MSP for South Scotland

Motion number: S6M – 11988

Parliament commended the exceptional efforts of Nicola George, Head of Fundraising, and her team at Ayrshire Cancer Support for their outstanding accomplishment in organising the “Big Dip” fundraising event on Boxing Day 2023, when supporters braved the icy waters of Ayr shores, successfully raising £25,000.

This motion recognised the selflessness of volunteers and the team who are dedicated to ensuring that free services reach even the most rural areas of Ayrshire, providing door-to-door patient transfer to the Beatson.

Motion 2: ACS Cheering Volunteering Awards

Ruth Maguire, MSP for Cunninghame South

Ruth Maguire commended Ayrshire Cancer Support for its Cheering Volunteering award night held at Ayr Racecourse on 30th September 2018, which recognised 12 dedicated volunteers for their contributions to the charity across a range of their services including patient transport, retail and fundraising. The MSP also recognised and thanked ACS’s 400- strong volunteer workforce on their continuing efforts in support of people with cancer in Ayrshire.

Motion 3: Congratulations to Ayrshire Cancer Support Group

Willie Coffey, MSP for Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley

Motion Number: S5M – 02076

Willie Coffey's motion, which was submitted with support for 16 other MSPs, congratulated ACS on receiving the Cream of Ayrshire “Toast of Ayrshire Award”. The MSP highlighted that ACS operates entirely on public funding, fundraising events, and revenue from charity shops, and he congratulated them on the ongoing success of the Kilmarnock Drop-In Centre.

ACS provides essential emotional and practical support to individuals facing cancer. The Kilmarnock Support Centre offers a range of services, including counselling, support groups, and complementary therapy, providing invaluable benefits to the local community.

These motions highlight the vital role that ACS plays in the lives of individuals and families affected by cancer in Ayrshire. As the organisation continues its mission of providing compassionate support, and free, professional services, its impact resonates throughout the west of Scotland, earning well-deserved recognition from the Scottish Parliament.
